PA Insurance for E-Hailing Drivers in Malaysia: What You Need to Know

Last Updated: April 30, 2026By Tags: , ,

A lot of e-hailing drivers in Malaysia think they’re fully covered once they’ve renewed their car insurance and slapped on the e-hailing add-on. And yes, that add-on is legally required — e-hailing insurance is required under Malaysian law and provides extra protection when the vehicle is used to carry paying passengers. But here’s the part that often gets missed: the e-hailing add-on protects your vehicle and your passengers. It doesn’t automatically protect you as the driver if you get injured.

That’s where Personal Accident (PA) coverage comes in. And if you’re spending hours on the road every day, it’s worth understanding exactly what you’re missing without it.

What Does PA Coverage Actually Do?

PA insurance pays you directly if you’re injured, permanently disabled, or killed in an accident. It’s about your body, your income, and your financial stability — not your car.

Think about what happens if you get into an accident and end up hospitalised for two weeks. Your e-hailing add-on covers the vehicle damage and your passenger’s claim. But your medical bills, your lost income during recovery, your daily expenses while you can’t work — none of that is covered unless you have PA protection.

For a part-time driver, that’s inconvenient. For a full-time driver who depends on e-hailing as their main income, that gap is a serious financial risk.

Doesn’t the E-Hailing Add-On Include PA?

Sometimes, yes — partially. Some insurers bundle limited PA coverage into their e-hailing add-on. For example, Allianz’s e-hailing add-on includes personal accident cover of RM50,000 due to accidental injury or death of the authorised e-hailing driver.

But not all add-ons are the same. Under a comprehensive car insurance plan, the named drivers of the insured vehicle are not covered for injury and death due to an accident — this coverage needs to be added on at a premium. Some e-hailing add-ons include PA benefits for the driver; others don’t. You need to check your specific policy, not assume.

If your current add-on doesn’t include PA, you have two options: switch to one that does, or buy a standalone PA policy separately.

The Other Thing Most Drivers Don’t Check

Your e-hailing insurance only covers you while you’re actually working. You will only be able to file claims if you get into an accident while you are completing a Grab ride or actively available on Grab.

So what happens if you get into an accident on your way home after logging off? Or during a personal trip between shifts? That’s where a standalone PA policy fills in — it covers you around the clock, not just when the app is open.

Grab Daily Insurance vs Annual Add-On

If you drive for Grab specifically, there are two ways to handle your e-hailing insurance. The daily insurance is recommended for part-time driver-partners or those planning to operate less frequently, while the annual add-on is recommended for full-time driver-partners or those who plan to operate regularly.

Grab is the only e-hailing operator offering daily e-hailing insurance in collaboration with selected partnered insurers, providing drivers with a highly flexible and convenient option.

One important thing to know: e-hailing insurance can only be purchased with comprehensive coverage, and both your basic motor insurance and e-hailing insurance must be issued by the same insurer. You can’t mix and match from different providers.

What to Check When Choosing PA Coverage as an E-Hailing Driver

Not every PA plan is built for someone doing commercial driving. Here’s what to look at before buying:

Does it cover commercial or e-hailing activities? Some personal PA plans are for private use only. If you get into an accident while on a ride and your PA policy excludes commercial activities, your claim could be rejected. Always check the coverage scope.

What’s the payout for injuries and permanent disability? PA plans vary widely in how much they pay out and under what conditions. A cheaper plan may have lower caps or more restricted definitions of “permanent disability.”

Is coverage active during working hours? Confirm the policy is valid while you’re actively driving for an e-hailing platform, not just during personal use.

What’s the claims process? Understand what documents you need and how long processing takes. A plan that pays out slowly doesn’t help when you’re off the road and not earning.

Bottom Line

If you drive for Grab, InDrive, Maxim, or any other e-hailing platform in Malaysia, you need three things in place: a comprehensive car insurance policy, an e-hailing add-on, and PA coverage that’s valid for commercial driving.

The first two keep you legal and protect your vehicle and passengers. The third one protects you — the person behind the wheel who’s on the road far more than the average Malaysian driver.

Check your current policy today. If PA isn’t explicitly included or the coverage scope excludes commercial activities, that’s a gap worth closing before your next shift.
